Aralam wildlife
sanctuary a 55 sq. kms in area and located on the western slopes of
the Western Ghats, the Aralam sanctuary is the northern most
wildlife sanctuary of Kerala. It was established in 1984. The
headquarters of the sanctuary is near Iritty, this small town is
located about 55 kms from Kannur. The sanctuary adjoins the Central
State Farm at Aralam. It lies between north latitude 11° 50' and 11°
52' and east longitude 75° 49' and 75° 57'.
A variety of flora and fauna endemic to the Western Ghats is found
here. Elephants, herds of deer, boar and bison are quite common.
Leopards, Jungle Cats and various types of Squirrels have also been
sighted.
Elephants, sloth bear, sambar, mouse-deer etc. are found in this
sanctuary. It is also rich in avifauna and reptiles. This sanctuary
is easily accessible from Kannur.
(35 kms from Thalassery): Elephants, bears, siberian duck, water
duck, jungle fowls, mynas, laughing thrushes, black bulbuls,
peafowls, woodpeckers, kingfishers the hornbill, stork, raptor,
darter, cormorant, grackle, cluster, indian rollers, common snipes,
crow pheasants, jungle nightjars, kites, grey drongos, malabar
trogons, large pied wagtails, sparrows, grey jungle fowls, indian
hill mynas, robins, jungle babblers, sunbirds, peacocks,
crimson-throated barbets, bee-eaters, shrikes, fairy bluebirds,
grey-headed fishing eagles, black winged kites, night herons, grey
hornbills, malabar hornbills and more than 253 additional species
including migrant birds, sambars, mouse deer etc. can be found in
the 55 sp. km sanctuary.
